Taking things without permission, or "stealing, as some of us may call it, is a developmental behaviour in children.
Taking things without permission, or "stealing, as some of us may call it, is a developmental behaviour in children.
This act of picking things up is a result of a need to be met.
For example, if your child is hungry and needs food or snacks to eat, there's a standing order that "nobody should eat the food in the pot". Or "don't touch the biscuits in my room".
What do you think your child will do when he can't bear being hungry?
You guessed right.
He will look for a way to satisfy his hunger and think of the consequences later.
As a developmental behaviour, your child will eventually outgrow it if you do the following.
• Teach your child respect for other people's property and remind him whenever he takes something that is not his own.
• Ensure not to starve or punish your child with food.
• Occasionally check your child's bags, pocket, wardrobe, reading table, etc. to ensure he is not keeping anything that is not his.
• Draw her attention constantly to your family's values and what your family represents.
• Give them consequences that are age-appropriate when they bring home something that is not theirs. It could be as simple as asking her to return it and making sure of it.
• Provide as much as you can for your child. Improvise where necessary and validate their feelings.
WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN YOUR CHILD PICKS/STEALS.
~ Do not shame your child.
~Do not beat, flog, or reset" your child's brain.
~ Starve your child when he picks something.
As I conclude this lesson, please note that your child is not a thi£f as you are thinking.
Just like you, your child is a work in progress.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to coming your way soon.
